Stabenow: Only union workers are "hard-working" November 13, 2021
Stabenow is old-school Democrat, considering collective bargaining rights sacrosanct and unions beneficial to everyone. They are certainly good for Democrats, who get the bulk of campaign contributions from union PACs and are the primary beneficiaries of union get-out-the-vote drives.
The above-market wages obtained in a collective bargaining session under the threat of a strike have a cost in the form of increased prices for customers and lower wages - or fewer jobs - for other workers.
U.S. Representative Dan Kildee - also of Michigan - is on board. He says "It puts American manufacturers in the lead, which is where we want them. . ." (source) So much for fair competition with plants in the U.S. owned by foreign auto companies.
The union-only tax credit provision is one of the things Stabenow's fellow senator Joe Manchin objects to in Biden's social spending bill. He says "We shouldn’t use everyone’s tax dollars to pick winners and losers.”
And it is a slap in the face to Tesla and other American electric car start-ups who showed the Big 3 automakers and the world that a practical, affordable, emission-free electric car is possible. That achievement was a big step toward reducing one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases, thus slowing the climate change that is putting us on the path to global catastrophe.
