42 Police & Fire Retirees from 2010, 2011
and 2012
Before April 2013, when a state law went
into effect banning the release of information regarding the calculation
of retirement benefits, I obtained pension calculation sheets for 42
Police and Fire retirees. You can see those documents by clicking the
retiree name below. It is from those documents that I obtained the full
retirement allowance, sometimes known as the straight life pension
amount. Base pay and monthly retirement benefit comes from
the document the City of Lansing provided to the Lansing State
Journal for their August 10 story,
Overtime spikes pensions for dozens of Lansing police, fire retirees.
"Survivor reduction" is the annualized
monthly retirement benefit divided by the full retirement allowance. The
highlighted percentages suggest that the pension was reduced due to the
survivor option chosen at retirement:
-
If survivor option II is chosen, the
survivor gets 75% of the pension after the retiree's death and the
retiree's pension is
93%
of the full retirement allowance.
-
If survivor option III is chosen, the
survivor gets 86% of the pension after the retiree's death and the
retiree's pension is
86%
of the full retirement allowance.
-
Survivor option IV is
for non-spousal beneficiaries. The
reduced pension is
actuarially determined based on the age of the member and the
beneficiary at the time of retirement.
"Difference" is the dollar amount by which
the full retirement allowance exceeds the annualized monthly pension. It
is provided only when the amount is more than a few dollars.
"FRA/BP" is base pay as a percentage of
the full retirement allowance. The retirement allowance exceeded base
pay for 3 retirees and exceeded 90% for another 26.

With survivor option I, the spouse receives
50 percent of the retirement allowance
after the retiree's death, and there is no reduction in the retiree's
pension to pay for it. He gets the full retirement allowance, the same
as the retiree who has no spouse or other beneficiary/survivor to
receive a portion of his pension after his death. |
