This is an update to my earlier story
on the Lansing city council primary election. Another set of
campaign finance reports have arrived: the pre-general election reports.
They were due October 23 for the period ending October 18. The next
reports are the post-election reports, due 30 after
election day.
For the first time, we see reports
from the 1st ward candidates, incumbent Jody Washington and
challenger Shelley Davis Mielock. Since they are the only two
running in the 1st ward, there was no primary and thus no primary
reports.
In addition to the standard
pre-general election report, candidates are required to immediately report any
contributions received between October 18 and the election. They are
referred to as "late contributions." Those contributions will also be
included in the post-election reports.
Following are links to the actual reports
along with contribution and expenditure totals and ending balances.

Includes "other receipts"
and late contributions; does not include contributions "in
kind." Patricia Spitzley had $4,862.61 in "in kind"
contributions; Shelley Davis Mielock had $2,321.79; the most any other candidate had was $441.19
(Emily Dievendorf). |
Since they are too numerous, I won't
list all the contributions to each candidate. (Too much work for
me.) You can view them in
the actual reports by clicking the links above. However, here are
the contributions from political action committees (PACs):

Finally, the following are links to lists of
expenditures for each candidate. Vendor address is shown on these
lists only when
not Lansing area. Boles' report stands out as the one with the
highest number of individual expenditures at 105. Next highest was
Dievendorf at 30. Forty of Boles' expenditures were for a "campaign
meeting" or "campaign luncheon" at a restaurant. A few other
candidates reported expenditures for "food" or "food for
volunteers," but none reported restaurant meals. The question that
must be asked is, Were these really campaign meetings or just
restaurant meals paid for out of campaign funds?
